THE SOCRATIC METHOD
BE PREPARED FOR SOCRATIC SEMINAR DISCUSSION NEXT WEEK (50 Points!)
You must have prepared this in order to participate in discussion:
1. Name:
2. Title and Author of Text (or Podcast)
3. Two sentence summary of material. If you will be discussing multiple texts or pieces, two sentences for a minimum of three, but more if you like (also the title and author for each).
4. A personal response for of three to six sentences. Pick a specific moment from each piece that challenges you personally, or makes you think about your own life.
5. Three thoughtful, open ended questions that relate to the material your covered. These questions should be a discussion starter that will lead to a good conversation.
Example:
Name: Amber Maiden
Title and Author: True Love, Excerpt from The Way Through, Lesson’s Learned on Life, Love and the Journey
Summary: This excerpt is about me (Amber Lisa) falling in love with my thug boyfriend in high school. I cover a lot of lessons that I learned from that relationship. Chapter 9: “True Love” – Amber Lisa – Optional
Personal Response: I don’t have much of a personal response to this now, because it’s very, very old to me. Ancient history. But at the time I was writing it, it was very emotional because – although it doesn’t say so in that particular chapter, later on, Key was murdered; and that affected me very deeply. His death caused me to really question what was going on in my life; and as a result of his death I made some definite decision about how I would change my life. When I was writing the chapter, I was actually processing a lot of stuff about that relationship that I had suppressed so it was very difficult for me. I know that I am writing about this as a writer and not a reader, but as a reader, (reading my own work) the responses are often the same.
Three thoughtful open-ended questions: Okay I find this part hard, but here we go: Why was Key an undercover thug? Why did he love me? How did he learn to become so fricking manipulative?
