Based on this memoir, Amber has created a workshop: The Way Through, Lessons, Learned on Life Love and the Journey of Healing from Domestic and Intimate Violence, that is one of many products that is offered as a product under the Alchemy Enterprise brand. It is a workshop for students who are in the process of healing from intimate violence in their lives. Amber Maiden holds a Juris Doctor degree as well as a Masters in English from George Mason University.  THE SOCRATIC METHOD

BE PREPARED FOR SOCRATIC SEMINAR DISCUSSION NEXT WEEK  (50 Points!)

You must have prepared this in order to participate in discussion:

1. Name:

2. Title and Author of Text (or Podcast)

3. Two sentence summary of material. If  you  will be discussing multiple texts or pieces, two sentences for a minimum of three, but more if you like (also the title and author for each).

4. A personal response for  of three to six sentences. Pick a specific moment from each piece that challenges you personally, or makes you think about your own life.

5.  Three thoughtful, open ended questions that relate to the material your covered. These questions should be a discussion starter that will lead to a good conversation.

Example:

Name: Amber Maiden

Title and Author: True Love, Excerpt from The Way Through, Lesson’s Learned on Life, Love and the Journey

Summary: This excerpt is about me (Amber Lisa) falling in love with my thug boyfriend in high school. I cover a lot of lessons that I learned from that relationship. Chapter 9:  “True Love” – Amber Lisa – Optional

Personal Response: I don’t have much of a personal response to this now, because it’s very, very old to me. Ancient history. But at the time I was writing it, it was very emotional because – although it doesn’t say so in that particular chapter, later on, Key was murdered; and that affected me very deeply. His death caused me  to really question what was going on in my life; and as a result of his death I made some definite decision about how I would change my life. When I was writing the chapter, I was actually processing a lot of stuff about that relationship that I had suppressed so it was very difficult for me. I know that I am writing about this as a writer and not a reader, but as a reader, (reading my own work) the responses are often the same.

Three thoughtful open-ended questions: Okay I find this part hard, but here we go: Why was Key an undercover thug? Why did he love me? How did he learn to become so fricking manipulative?

The Great Debate – Opening Statements, Closing Statements, Questions

Opening statement – remember you logos, pathos, ethos – it’s best to begin with a compelling narrative, draw your listeners in, then get into the facts – you must touch on how social media distorts or reveals the truth about the the Planned Parenthood Controversy, Black Lives Matter, and the Presidential Candidates.

Questions – consider challenging questions that you want to ask the other side. As a group, prepare ten at least for the other side.

Closing Statements – It is hard to write one without having heard the other side’s arguments, but try to think of a story your team wants to tell, facts that you want to raise, the most salient points you want to close on.

The Great Debate Results

First of all I want to say thank you, for an Awesome Debate!

Both sides prepared very well, argued very well were very engaged and yet still respectful, this was one of the best debates I have ever watched! Well done class!

However, there is a clear winner.  In this instance the con side won the debate – and no not because I’m slightly biased toward the con side, although that certainly didn’t help. But the con side won largely because of Jose, who clearly has had experience with debates as he was utilizing a lot of advanced techniques that are employed by skilled  debaters and.or litigators. So having Jose as leader benefited the con side immensely, as without Jose’s help the two sides probably would have been closer to a tie.

CON SIDE WINS!
But, there were some things that the con side did, that clearly were superior to to the pro side, for one, the con side’s opening statement was more appropriately scheduled for the time that had been allotted. (In the future pro side, when preparing a written statement for presentation, you will want to time it to ensure that you are filling all of the time allotted to you, or are not running out of time, as you did.)

Additionally, the con’s  opening statement was slightly more conversational and therefore engaging, also they have visual’s. A picture is worth 1000 words! Awesome opening for the con side! Really one of the best I’ve ever heard or seen!  As a result, the Con’s won an additional 25  points for a total of 125!

I‘m not completely finished reviewing all of the debate materials, but based on what I’ve reviewed so far, it looks as though everyone participated and so everyone should be getting that score, unless you hear otherwise from me.

Con side be sure to than Jose! He really helped you win!

PRO SIDE

However, for the pro side, don’t despair. Really awesome job! A little too much prep on the logos side, however (logic) not enough pathos (emotion/engagement).

I did appreciate the incredibly thorough opening statement. I appreciate that you handed that in before the debate began, because it really helped me to follow the arguments you were trying to make. I think that I am going to require that, from now on groups submit their opening statements prior to the debate.

Your score is 95. I wanted to give you all a perfect score, but you all really should have made the tone more conversational and engaging. Lesson learned. Excellent job with your logic and credibility, though. Excellent job on logos and ethos.
